Arsenal players will wear GPS vests during their pre-season games this summer to help manage and improve their fitness levels, Arsène Wenger has revealed.

The devices were used for the first time last summer in a friendly at Barnet and the squad were again seen sporting them during Wednesday’s game against a Malaysia XI.

The vests track and record the movements of individual players on the pitch as well as measuring heart rate and helping to prevent injuries by assessing a player’s work load.

“We use them in the friendlies because it gives us an indication of the fatigue levels of the players and the distances they [are] managing to do,” said Wenger.

“It's interesting for us to improve the fitness of the players in pre-season.

“We are not allowed to use them in the Premier League. It already happens now during the Premier League games but is not directly measured on the players.”
