Arsène Wenger says Robin van Persie and Laurent Koscielny were a little “on the edge” ahead of Tuesday’s game against Marseille.

Wenger rested the duo for the Champions League Group F clash with Didier Deschamps’ side following the frantic 5-3 victory at Stamford Bridge just four days earlier.

The Arsenal manager revealed that the duo would be back in contention to face West Brom on Saturday, citing mild fatigue for the pair’s absence against Marseille.

“He [Robin] was a bit on the edge after the Chelsea game but he was not injured,” said Wenger. “He was just very tired after Chelsea.

“On Tuesday the question was do I play him an hour and take him off or put him on in the last half-hour if needed. I chose the second option.

“The negative is that we didn't win, the positive is that he didn't get injured.

“Koscielny was on the edge on Tuesday night because he had a very good game on Saturday,” he added.
