Arsène Wenger says FA regulations are the only thing stopping Benik Afobe from playing for Huddersfield against Arsenal on Sunday.
The highly-rated striker is currently on loan at the League One side until the end of the season after extending his temporary deal on Thursday and it was initially thought he would follow the precedent set by Sanchez Watt.
Watt was allowed to play for Leeds in the FA Cup Third Round because he was on a season-long loan, however that isn’t the case with Afobe. Wenger insists he would let the 17-year-old play at Emirates Stadium but complex rules simply won’t allow it.
“I [would] allow him to play but he cannot play,” says the manager.
“I don’t know the rules because they keep changing. Before, even in the Premier League, you could allow the players to play [against their parent club] and [that’s] what I did always.
“In fairness with a guy like [Francis] Jeffers, he scored against us [while on loan]. Instead of saying you are fair they said you are stupid!”
