Arsène Wenger has confirmed that Wellington will be sent on loan to a Spanish club after having his application for a work permit turned down.

The 17-year-old Brazilian striker isn’t allowed to play in England until the application is granted and, in the meantime, Wenger wants him to continue his development in Spain.

Wellington will follow in the footsteps of Carlos Vela who spent a season at Segunda Division side Salamanca after his move from Mexico.

“He has been turned down for a work permit and that means he cannot play in England,” said Wenger. “He will certainly go to Spain on loan.

“You can only ask for one work permit per season so we have to wait at least until the end of the season to come back.

“Hopefully he does well in the Spanish championship and we have a better chance with the work permit.”
