Arsène Wenger admits that his players showed Barcelona too much respect when the sides met in the Champions League last season.

The Catalan giants were a class apart in the first half of the first leg at Emirates Stadium last March, dominating possession and creating chance after chance before taking a two-goal lead.

Arsenal hit back to draw that match and then led in the Nou Camp before Lionel Messi scored four times to take Barcelona through. No one could argue that the La Liga side did not deserve their win but Wenger has regrets over the way his team approached the tie.

"I can't deny we showed them too much respect last season, especially in the first half of the first game,” he said.

“Also, I can't deny that it's a disadvantage for them to play us as well.

“We know from last season's games that what is most important is to play at our level. Barcelona are maybe better this season than last season but so are we. That will make the game even more interesting.”
