Arsène Wenger believes an injection of self-belief was critical to his team’s FA Cup victory on Sunday.

Arsenal were staring a fourth-round exit in the face at half time as goals from Richard Dunne and Darren Bent had put the visitors on the front foot.

But a spirited reply paid dividends as three goals in just seven second-half minutes booked Arsenal’s place against either Middlesbrough or Sunderland in the last 16.

“I said that we have the character and the determination to stay in this competition,” Wenger told Arsenal Player. “It was a good test of our mental qualities and I think we passed it in a positive way.

“There is a good spirit in the squad and that came out. It was a bit harsh for us to be 2-0 down at half time.

“Once you get back to 2-1 you know you can come back and I think we did that very well today. I must say I am very proud of the players.

“I feared that the impact of the results before might be too much for us to come out with such a reward. But the players showed a great response.”
