Wenger - We need clarification on tackling

By Rob Kelly

Arsène Wenger believes it is “too simplistic” to ban all two-footed challenges from football.

According to reports, referees' chief Mike Riley will instruct officials to dismiss any player who commits a two-footed tackle - regardless of whether contact is made or if the ball is won.

But Wenger says that there are occasions where it is necessary for the tackler to use both legs.

“I feel at the moment [players] are punished more for frontal challenges, rather than those from behind. I don’t know why,” he said.

“I would prefer that [referees show a] red card [for] the bad tackles and not the good challenges as sometimes the second leg has to follow if you go down. It depends where you put the second leg.

“It is too simplified to sum it up like that [and ban all challenges].”
