Arsène Wenger believes Arsenal must accept criticism over their defending this season - and strive to improve.

The Frenchman saw his side keep a clean sheet against Marseille in midweek but the Gunners have conceded 21 goals in ten Premier League fixtures this season.

That figure is skewed by the 8-2 defeat at Manchester United in August but Wenger still wants his team to work hard and tighten up at the back.

"You have to accept the numbers," he said. "When you concede goals you have to accept that you have defensive problems and that is the same for every club.

"We scored five goals at Chelsea and everybody in the week questioned the defence. That's part of our game and I must say that when you have conceded eight at Manchester United that is of course a subject that we have to face.

"I believe we have improved, we showed it again on Tuesday night, and it must be a motivation for us to improve our defensive record because it is not good."
