Arsène Wenger believes Arsenal could pay £200,000 a week to a player - but not anytime soon.

According to reports, Manchester City have made summer signing Yaya Toure the first Premier League footballer to earn that wage. Apparently, the £24million midfielder will pick up £221,000 a week from next April to soften the blow of the government's 50 per cent tax rise.

Arsenal regulars may raise eyebrows at that level of income but they could one day be watching a £200,000-per-week player of their own.

"If it is the market price and we have the resources available and if we can balance our accounts then yes [we would pay that]," said Wenger. "But in the next year or two? No.

"I cannot decode what is reasonable or not. The only thing I can decide is whether we can balance the accounts or not."
