Arsène Wenger believes that the points system in the Premier League will force Arsenal to "gamble" if they want to keep their title challenge on track.

The Frenchman has already seen his side lose five times in the League this season and, as they strive to close an eight-point gap on the leaders Liverpool, he is well aware that draws are almost as damaging as defeats.

Wenger knows that Arsenal cannot afford many of either if they want to bring the title back to North London and expects the 'carrot' of three points for a win to drive his players on in the weeks and months to come.

"I don't know [how many games we can afford to lose] because it depends on how many games the others lose," said Wenger.

"A three-pointer is not necessarily linked with the number of games you lose but it is also linked with the number of draws.

"When you lose more games you can less afford the draw and you are always in the position where you have to gamble with half an hour or 20 minutes to go.

"In a three-point system, the number of games you win is much more important."
