Arsène Wenger insists that Arsenal do not lack a “winning mentality” - but he admits they need the silverware to prove it.

The Frenchman has overseen a period of great success since joining the Club 14 years ago, winning seven major honours, but he has not lifted a trophy since the 2005 FA Cup.

According to reports, Cesc Fabregas has questioned whether Wenger’s squad possesses the right mentality to end that wait this season. But the manager believes his captain’s comments have been taken out of context.

“It can be misinterpreted,” said Wenger.

“I think everybody has a great desire to win but you get a winning mentality as well when you have won.

“What is at stake for us isn’t the desire to win but to make history and to win trophies. As long as you have not won you are not completely certain that you can do it but that does not mean that you lack the desire to win.

“This team has a great desire to win but you have to show it week in week out. This life, at the top level today, in the best league in the world, is to turn up every single game running on full cylinders.”
