If Arsenal are chasing the game at Barcelona on Tuesday night they may turn to Plan Bendtner.
Arsène Wenger’s side have always been built upon short, sharp passing fluidity. In fact the biggest criticism labelled at them in recent years has been their tendency to over-elaborate.
Nicklas Bendtner has the technical ability to fit into that regime but even his manager accepts that the Danish striker offers a more direct option in a knockout tie such as the one in Spain.
“He is important because he gives us something different,” said Wenger. “He has size, he is good in the air so on crosses you have hope with him.
“When people tell us ‘you have no Plan B’ he gives us a little bit. We always want to play football but he gives us an option in the air that we don’t have without him.”
