Arsène Wenger says Theo Walcott’s recent dip in form was a result of his increasing defensive duties in an Arsenal shirt.

The winger bounced back to his best in Saturday’s incredible victory at Chelsea with a fine performance down the right where he gave former Gunner Ashley Cole plenty of problems.

Walcott scored Arsenal’s third goal of the game at Stamford Bridge and Wenger says the England man is now an improved player.

“Theo has been struggling because we are making him work very hard,” the Frenchman admitted. “He is more a complete player today.

“He is not a liability defensively. He does his defensive job.

“At the start that makes you have heavy legs when you win the ball back. But now he wins the ball defensively and he is dangerous going forward. He works so hard.”
