Arsène Wenger knows Theo Walcott would like to play centrally - but he is never badgered to do so by the player.

Walcott has plied his trade out wide for the majority of his Arsenal career but has never hid his desire to move inside one day.

All the same, Robin van Persie praised the England international’s productivity from the flank this week and Wenger says it is a role that suits Walcott well - for now.

“He’s respectful and we know him well,” said the Frenchman. “His desire is to play in the middle and one day he will. He’s still running 100m in 11 seconds so it’s good to put him out there.

“At the moment first of all I have no midfielders who are comfortable wide: neither Arteta, nor Ramsey are completely really wide players.

“And I would say that Ramsey is more uncomfortable on the flank than Walcott is comfortable inside at the moment.”
