Jay Simpson... striker currently away with West Brom
Wenger - The importance of loan deals
By Declan Taylor
Arsène Wenger believes that loan spells teach players invaluable lessons about responsibility.
Arsenal currently have 13 players away on loan, in all four English divisions, Italy, Spain and Holland. And, according to Wenger, players grow accustomed to “the fight” for a first team place while they are away.
Jay Simpson is one of two Gunners currently with Premier League clubs and the manager thinks that the 20-year-old striker needs minutes at this stage of his career.
“Someone like Jay needs to play,” said Wenger. “It is part of the education of the player to get them out on loan; to take the responsibility of playing in a first team and have to fight for a place in the dressing room.
“Not to think ‘I am disappointed I am not in the Champions League' but to know what it is like to play in their championship and to assert their personality in the dressing.
“They come back and realise that life may not have been as bad as they thought here.”
