Arsène Wenger says Wojciech Szczesny has proved he can handle the pressure of big occasions but admits the goalkeeper does need to work on his distribution.

The young Pole will continue between the posts against Wigan on Saturday for what will be his fifth consecutive start in the continued absence of Lukasz Fabianski.

Szczesny has looked confident and assured in every aspect of his game since making his Premier League debut at a hostile Old Trafford in December. Every aspect, that is, except his kicking.

However, the 20-year-old has been working hard to improve his distribution and Wenger is delighted with his progress so far.

“I feel he is not fazed by the pressure, he looks calm and focused,” said Wenger. “Overall, he is dealing very well with the pressure.

“We knew before he played that on the technical side he has no problem, but he also shows he can deal with the pressure.

“He works on his distribution with me as well, and especially with goalkeeper coach Gerry Payton. That is one of the parts of his game which he needs to work on.”
