Arsène Wenger disagrees with the idea that luck 'evens itself out' over the course of a football season. Indeed, the Frenchman believes that such a theory gives referees free rein to make mistakes.

Lady Luck certainly hasn't been shining on Arsenal in recent weeks with key decisions costing them dear in the Premier League and Champions League. However, the fact that she may come back at some point offers scant consolation to the Gunners boss.

"I feel some years you are a bit more lucky than others and some years you are a bit more unlucky than others," said Wenger before Saturday's match with Reading.

"The old saying that errors level out during the season means the interests of the referee is to make as many mistakes as possible because in the end it doesn't make a difference."
