When the dust has settled on the season, Arsène Wenger will not be too dissatisfied with his side’s endeavours.

The doom merchants were circling when Arsenal lost five of their opening 14 Premier League games. But, although the title has eventually eluded them, an unbeaten run of 19 games has all but guaranteed Champions League football next season.

In addition, the Gunners made the FA Cup Semi-Final and secured a Champions League Semi-Final berth for only the second time in their history.

All reasons to be cheerful, according to Wenger.

“I believe that we are at the stage in England where you can only come out with negativity every day,” the manager said at Friday’s pre-match press conference.

“But I'm long enough in the game to know that to manage a team that goes into the Semi-Final of the FA Cup and Semi-Final of the Champions League, with a team of that age, and to still have a chance to go back into 3rd position ... OK, we didn't win the championship but it could be worse in the future don't worry.”
