Arsène Wenger believes the destiny of Robin van Persie’s football career is entirely in the striker’s hands.

The Dutchman has enjoyed a spectacular season in an Arsenal shirt so far, hitting 18 goals in all competitions to help sustain the team’s fine form both domestically and in Europe.

Record goalscorer Thierry Henry was honoured with a statue at Emirates Stadium on Friday and Wenger says Van Persie has it in him to emulate his former team-mate.

“He is on the way,” said the Frenchman. “Two of the players unveiled I had the privilege to manage. Hopefully, there will be some more.

“I leave it to you. He has exceptional quality and the present is very important for us.

“We are in the middle of the season where every point is important. For Robin, I hope he will be great but that is down to him.”
