Arsène Wenger admits that shoring up his Arsenal defence is a major priority this season.

The Gunners matched Manchester United and Chelsea for goals last term, scoring 68 in their 38 Premier League fixtures. But Wenger's side leaked 37 goals over the same period - that's 10 more than the aforementioned rivals and 13 more than runners-up Liverpool.

Kolo Toure left Emirates Stadium for Manchester City this summer but Wenger moved quickly to bring Thomas Vermaelen to the Club in June. The Belgian defender already looks like a solid acquisition after his towering debut performance at Everton on Saturday.

Arsenal's willingness to press Everton all over the Goodison Park pitch was another feature of their 6-1 victory and Wenger believes his team must improve in that department.

"I wouldn’t like to come out too much on the tactical aspect of the game," he said.

"But we know that last year we conceded 37 goals and you cannot win the championship in England conceding 37 goals no matter how good you are going forward.

"That is something we have to address and correct compared to last year."
