Arsène Wenger has welcomed the appointment of Michel Platini as Uefa president.
The former French midfielder edged out the current incumbent, Lennart Johansson, when the results of voting was announced on Friday morning. Wenger has been a friend of the Platini family for decades but at the same time paid tribute to the outgoing leader.
"For me Johannson has done a great job and I think he deserves a lot of credit because he [steered] his boat very well," said Wenger. "Now it is the turn of Platini.
"It is the first time that a player has been in charge. We in football always complain that the players have no say, so at least we cannot complain anymore.
"I've known Platini for 30 years and I like him as a person. He is a very intelligent man and he loves football. I know his family too - his father and his mother. When I was working in Nancy his father was one of my directors."
