Arsène Wenger can understand why Scott Parker has been voted the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year.

The England midfielder won the award on Friday following an outstanding season with West Ham, despite the Hammers’ lowly position in the Premier League.

Parker has received plaudits after impressing for both club and country and Wenger can see why the 30-year-old has topped the journalists’ poll.

“It is a justifiable choice because he [has] had an outstanding season,” said the Arsenal manager.

“I feel recently he has been stopped by injuries but he was very influential in the West Ham team.”
