Arsène Wenger says Arsenal’s creative midfield trio will always create chances for Theo Walcott to score - no matter where he plays.

The England international has expressed his desire to play as a central striker, and strengthened his case with a goal in Saturday’s north London derby win against Tottenham

Wenger says that while Walcott offers a different option when he plays through the middle, he should never find goalscoring opportunities hard to come by.

“He can play in both positions [out wide or up front],” the manager said. “You also have situations where the goalkeeper kicks the ball long and you need Olivier Giroud to deflect the ball or win the ball with his chest, which Theo would not be capable of doing.

“He is a different type of player, he can play up front and he can also play up front with Giroud. He has found a good mixture of positional play on the wing now, and he is difficult to stop.

“It is always good when you can play everywhere. He finished as a centre forward [against Tottenham] and scored a goal, but when you play with the midfield we have - Wilshere, Cazorla, Arteta - they will find you in any position if you move well.”
