Arsène Wenger says his midfield has the strength needed to mount a strong challenge for honours this season.

The Gunners boss added Yossi Benayoun and Mikel Arteta to his first-team squad on transfer deadline day, and says his additions will give the Arsenal core the required steel to succeed.

“When you don't win games people will always assess, and you have to accept that,” Wenger said.

“I don't think we are too lightweight, I feel you cannot have all the qualities. Our game is based on movement and we have players who can integrate into our team because they are mobile."

Wenger’s late dealings to bring the experienced duo to Emirates Stadium in the transfer window were greeted well by the Arsenal faithful, and the boss has backed both to show their value to the first-team ranks.

“I expect them to have an immediate impact," he said. "They are players I admire for their technical qualities; they are mobile and technically gifted. That's the game we want to play, so they should integrate very well.

“Their ages were not a priority for me - if Arteta and Benayoun were 24 as well I would have taken them. It is just a fact that they have more experience.”
