Arsène Wenger won’t be surprised if Kieran Gibbs gets a phonecall from Fabio Capello in the near future.

In his first season as a left-back, the 19-year-old has started five of the last six Premier League fixtures, the FA Cup Semi-Final and both legs of the Champions League Semi-Final against Manchester United.

He made a costly mistake in that last tie, allowing Ji-Sung Park to stab the holders into a 2-0 aggregate advantage after an untimely slip. Gibbs was distraught after the game but Wenger has no doubts that the teenager will learn from his error and predicts great things for the young Gunner.

“This year, a player like Kieran Gibbs has been a revelation,” said the Frenchman.

“I believe he will play for England, and if it happened very quickly, I would not be surprised.

“However, what happened to him in the second leg of the Manchester United game will not happen to him next year.”
