Arsène Wenger insists his side’s heavy defeat at Old Trafford in August will not have any bearing on Sunday’s showdown against Manchester United.

The Arsenal manager admits the 8-2 loss hurt but says his side must remain focused on the task in hand rather than reflecting on the past.

“I believe every game is a new life; you can do well, you can do badly. We just want to take this opportunity to do well,” said Wenger.

“The result in August has nothing to do with that, we cannot wipe it out. It will not be an excuse not to beat them - it is over. You focus on what is in front of you and you try to do as well as you can.

“We are highly focused and motivated to win our game and hopefully we will have some people available who are today still doubtful. What is important is our determination and focus and that we are ready to give everything to win it.”
