Arsène Wenger does not see a connection between the 4-4 draw with Newcastle and the famous North London derby of October 2008.
Arsenal let a four-goal lead slip at St. James’ Park last weekend after Abou Diaby was sent off early in the second half.
It brought back memories of Tottenham’s comeback at Emirates Stadium two seasons ago when Spurs scored twice in the final few minutes to snatch a 4-4 draw – but Wenger thinks different factors were to blame on each occasion.
“No [there is no common factor], because as much against Tottenham we lost our way,” he said.
“Against Newcastle, maybe we wanted too much to keep our advantage.
“No [pressure wasn’t an issue],” he added. “If you see how we played when we were 4-0 up we were closer to 5-0 than 4-1.
“When we went down to ten men, we have thought ‘let’s protect [our lead] and not be stupid. We invited the pressure.”Copyright 2016 The Arsenal Football Club plc. Permission to use quotations from this article is granted subject to appropriate credit being given to www.arsenal.com as the source
