Arsène Wenger will try to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes but he will be focused on quality, not price tags.

The Frenchman has welcomed four new faces so far this summer but has made no secret of his desire to add defensive reinforcements and now has more funds at his disposal following the departure of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona.

Wenger played down reports linking him with moves for Jadson and Carlos Tevez at his pre-match press conference but the Frenchman is very much in the market - even if he has specific requirements on his shopping list.

"We are not frightened to spend money but we have to be convinced the player is better than what we have," said Wenger. "That is our main concern, to bring quality. We have quality, but want to add more quality.

"We will try [to buy] but let's not forget that we have brought players in. I have Carl Jenkinson, we have bought Gervinho in, we have bought Joel Campbell in, we have brought Ryo Miyaichi in and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. You do not know them very well yet but they are all quality players."

A section of the travelling support at St. James' Park on Saturday implored Wenger to spend and the manager put their demands in perspective when he faced the media ahead of the Udinese tie.

"I have been in football for a long, long time and I don't think just spending money is a target that is defendable," said Wenger. "To spend the money on a top player is defendable. But just to spend the money is like you are worried.

"Our fans can be proud of the way we run this club, of the quality of player we have and of the financial situation that is existing at the Club. Rather than convicting this club, they have more reason to be proud of the whole situation here.

"We have built a team and a stadium in such a short space of time, and have a strong financial situation - and we always survived at the top level. There are more reasons to be positive than the negatives ones being sold by everybody."
