Saturday’s FA Cup Semi-Final defeat was not just a result of a defensive lapse according to Arsène Wenger.

With the scores locked at 1-1, Didier Drogba burst past the onrushing Lukasz Fabianski to slide Chelsea into the lead, and ultimately into the FA Cup Final, six minutes from time. It was a cruel blow for the young goalkeeper on his 24th birthday.

But, speaking at Monday’s press conference, Wenger explained how missed chances were as much to blame as that particular incident.

“We have watched the game again and seen the chances we had,” the manager said. “It is true that we can defend better but we could have as well scored more goals.

“We had a few opportunities on crosses that we didn’t take well but it was a very tight game where both teams went for it.

“In the end, it’s true, that they won the game on a misunderstanding between our central defence and the goalkeeper.

“We have to accept that, deal with it and not repeat it - we have many big games coming up and we feel we can win them.”
