Arsène Wenger says Liverpool were unlucky not to beat Lyon on Wednesday night and were stopped only by a "fantastic goalkeeper".
Hugo Lloris made a series of fine saves in the match and, after a last-minute equaliser from Argentine striker Lisandro, Liverpool's Champions League fate is out of their own hands.
Wenger was unable to watch the game in full as it took place at the same time as the Gunners' 4-1 win over AZ Alkmaar, but after watching the highlights the Frenchman believes Liverpool were unfortunate not to win.
"Liverpool were unlucky," he said. "They faced a goalkeeper who will be a fantastic goalkeeper."
Wenger also has sympathy for Rafael Benitez' side and says nothing seems to be going right for the Merseysiders.
"At the moment they are in a period where no matter what they do, it goes against them."
