Wenger - Let’s improve big-game record

Arsene Wenger has urged his side to improve their record against the 'top teams' when they host Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

Arsenal go into their clash with the champions having picked up four points from seven games against top-five opposition this season.

Wenger believes a lack of belief has been costly in those games but is backing his team to demonstrate their new-found confidence against Sir Alex Ferguson’s men.

“I personally believe we have been remarkably consistent against the teams who do not fight for the championship,” the manager told Arsenal Player. “Last year we did well against top teams, but this year we have not.

“I felt it was a lot down to the fact we renewed the team and had a big lack of confidence for a while in the season. Now we have a good opportunity on Sunday to show that we have made that step so let's take it.”

The Gunners go into Sunday’s game in the knowledge that top-four rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea will have already played at the weekend.

Wenger recognises that the results of those two teams could add or take away pressure from his side, but maintains that his players will be focused solely on what they have to do.

“It is a little bit [of a change in dynamic] because it can put more or less pressure on you, but at the end of the day we know we can take care of our future [by taking] care of our own game,” he said.

“That is what we want to do. We did it always when we played before [the other teams] and we have to remain the same when we play after them.”
