Arsène Wenger believes Wayne Bridge could find himself in a "very difficult situation" after turning his back on international football.
The Manchester City left-back announced on Thursday that he does not wish to be selected for the England national side and will not participate in this summer's World Cup Finals in South Africa.
Bridge's decision was influenced by allegations surrounding his former team-mate for club and country, John Terry, and Wenger admits that the former Chelsea defender finds himself in a special situation.
But the Arsenal manager feels that Bridge could suffer the same fate as Claude Makelele, another former Chelsea star who was told by the French Football Federation in 2006 that he would be suspended from club matches if he carried out his threat to retire from internationals.
"Legally, I think Bridge puts himself in a very difficult situation," said Wenger.
"Many times in France the player decided to retire and the manager didn’t want him to retire. Of course you try to convince the player but, legally, there is law there to force a player to turn up or suspend him.
"But [I understand that] this is a special situation."
