Arsène Wenger says it was vital to get back to winning ways in Saturday’s London derby against West Ham.

After falling behind to Mohamed Diame’s strike, Wenger’s team rallied and ran out 3-1 winners at the Boleyn Ground.

The Arsenal boss insists victory was crucial in the wake of last week’s home defeat to Chelsea.

“It was essential for us to win the game after our defeat last Saturday,” said Wenger. “To respond in the way we did is absolutely fantastic. I felt we had a good game.

“We were mentally strong because we were 1-0 down with their first shot on goal, and to come back and win the game in a convincing way, I’m very proud of my team and it’s good for the future to win here.

“The team is mature and mentally strong and focused,” added Wenger.

“Without that here [against West Ham], you have no chance - they are so strong in the air and they are so strong in the box.

“I’m very happy to come back with the three points because one point was not enough for us today and we had to win it. We did it in a convincing way.”
