Arsène Wenger believes Robin van Persie’s stunning goal spree is down to his relaxed approach on the pitch.

The Dutch international has hit 12 goals in his last eight games for Arsenal to continue an astonishing year in the red and white of Arsenal.

Wenger insists his star striker has always had it in him to produce such a rich vein of form - but he refused to draw comparisons with the world’s best.

“He is in a period where he shows it is natural for him to score goals,” said Wenger. “When you are not desperate for goals, you score.

“Hopefully we can keep him going, he is one of the top, top, top in the world at the moment.

“I think you have to compare him with players playing in his period,” he added.

“We have [Lionel] Messi, we have [Cristiano] Ronaldo, we have many good strikers. I don’t try to compare him with other strikers. I just want to keep him going as he does at the moment for us.”
