The nagging shoulder injury that has ended Theo Walcott's season has also blighted his campaign according to Arsène Wenger.

The winger, who only celebrated his 18th birthday on Friday, must go under the surgeon's scalpel on Tuesday to correct a troubling shoulder problem. The sight of Walcott clutching his arm at Goodison Park on Sunday after falling heavily is one of the saddest sights of Arsenal's season. However, his goal in the Carling Cup Final and excellent cameos in the early part of the season must rank alongside some of the better memories.

"Until he had his shoulder injury he was very promising," said Wenger following the defeat at Goodison Park. "After he had his shoulder injury he was 50 per cent of what he was before.

"You could see that today. He is on for 10 minutes and his shoulder pops out. You cannot play football like that."
