Arsene Wenger... will not be appointing his successor

Wenger - I will not name the next manager

By Nick Teale

Arsène Wenger insists that he will NOT be involved in the appointment of his successor when the time comes to leave Arsenal.

The Frenchman joined the Club in 1996 and has led the Gunners to three league titles, four FA Cups, four Community Shields and a Champions League Final.

Over the last 13 years Wenger has built what will become a long-lasting legacy at Arsenal and he has no intention of relinquishing his position just yet.

But when he does finally call it a day, the Arsenal manager will not pick the man who follows in his footsteps. Indeed, Wenger's only intention is to leave the Club in the strongest possible position.

"I have a very strong relationship with this Club," said Wenger, speaking ahead of the international break. "But I always believe the most important thing in the Club is that everybody does what he is paid for and not the rest.

"If they consult me I will give an opinion but I certainly will not name the next manager because that's not my job and I wouldn't like to do anything other than my job.

"When I leave this Club one day I would like to leave it in fantastic shape and give the [new] manager an opportunity to do better.

"[I want to] leave a team behind that has potential, not a team where nobody is there anymore."
