Arsène Wenger has defended his decision not to buy another striker before the transfer window closed.

The Arsenal manager's only piece of business ahead of Friday's deadline was the acquisition of midfielder Lassana Diarra from Chelsea. Earlier that day, it was put to Wenger that he would be light up front if he did not add a frontman.

"Well I signed Emmanuel Adebayor in January [2006] and he has worked extremely well," he replied. "Robin van Persie was injured last year and I always knew he would come back. I bought Eduardo in the summer and, don't forget, I have Bendtner back.

"Every other club in the Premier League seems to phone me to get him on loan. So how can I say that everybody wants you but we want you here and then go to buy someone new."
