Arsène Wenger says Gerrard Houllier is “as good as he can be” after his release from hospital following a heart problem.

The Aston Villa manager, who has suffered with his health in the past and underwent major heart surgery in 2001, is recovering well but will not be in the away dug-out at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Wenger has spoken to his fellow countryman and admits Houllier will need time to get back to full strength.

“I have seen him and he is as good as he can be,” said the Arsenal manager on Friday. “I hope he will be back as quickly as possible.

“He needs to observe a period of rest and I do not want to comment further on that. If he wants to communicate I think it is down to him [and] not down to me to speak about his health.

“I am not medically competent enough to talk about that. It is not because I am a friend that I am entitled to talk about that.”
