Arsène Wenger has paid tribute to the England cricket team after they secured an emphatic Ashes victory over Australia.

Andrew Strauss’ team wrapped up the final Test in Sydney on Friday morning, winning by an innings and 83 runs to secure a 3-1 series triumph - their first Down Under in 24 years.

The Ashes were retained with an equally impressive win in Melbourne last week and, although Wenger is no cricket aficionado, he appreciates the magnitude of England’s achievement.

“You cannot not follow the cricket, because the cricket follows you - when you switch on the television, it is cricket,” he said.

“It is good for England and I am very happy.

“We have some England players who are big Arsenal fans as well. They now want to win the World Cup too.”
