Kieran Gibbs... sidelined since November
Wenger - Gibbs could be back by summer
By Chris Harris
Arsène Wenger admits that Kieran Gibbs could return before the end of the season but he believes it’s “premature” to suggest that the left-back could feature at the World Cup.
Last month Gibbs was ruled out for the rest of the campaign after a second operation on the broken metatarsal he suffered during the game against Standard Liege on November 24.
However, the 20-year-old has been linked with a call-up to England’s World Cup squad in the wake of a serious ankle injury to Ashley Cole and Wayne Bridge’s decision to turn his back on international football.
Wenger admits that Gibbs may recover by the summer but he believes the Arsenal youngster is an extreme long shot to play any role in South Africa.
“There is a little chance [that Gibbs will be fit before the end of the season] if all goes well now,” said Wenger.
“I don’t know yet [if he will play enough] because I cannot give you any date of his return to football. It’s very premature at the moment, he is still in a little cast and we are at the beginning of March.
“But I believe he will play one day for the national team, I am convinced of that.”
