Arsène Wenger admits that they had to do things in a ‘different way’ following the departure of Mathieu Flamini in the summer, but the manager is adamant that his midfield replacements have plugged the gap.

Flamini received justified praise for a sterling season alongside Cesc Fabregas in the Gunners’ engine room last term but the dynamic midfielder swapped Arsenal for AC Milan in the summer, much to the disappointment of his manager. However, in Alex Song and Denilson, Wenger is sure that he has suitable midfield options.

“I dont deny the quality of Flamini but he wanted to go. I didn’t want him to go” Wenger said ahead of the visit of Manchester United on Saturday. “Today, we do it in a different way and we have to show we can be just as efficient.

“I think Denilson had an outstanding start to the season, he is going from strength to strength and Alex Song can play that role too.”
