Robin van Persie has never been better because he's never been fitter for longer.

That's the view of Arsène Wenger after watching his captain provide another match-winning performance at Emirates Stadium on Sunday. Van Persie scored twice in a 2-1 win over Sunderland and heads to Marseille in arguably the form of his life after 28 goals in 34 appearances this year.

Wenger signed the Dutchman from Feyenoord in May 2004 and believes that his new skipper is flying high because, unlike in previous seasons, he's stayed fit.

"He takes the captaincy role very seriously but what inspires Robin van Persie is that, touch wood, for a long time he has had a consistent presence and has not been disturbed by injuries," said Wenger.

"The biggest problem with modern sport is to be in and out because it takes so much time to find the sharpness back. But this year I think he has scored 28 goals in 34 games - and that is absolutely exceptional."
