Arsène Wenger still intends to bring in a centre back before the transfer window closes but admits he is "far from close" to signing Sebastien Squillaci.
The 30-year-old Sevilla defender is the latest name to be linked with Arsenal as Wenger looks to reinforce a squad that shed four centre backs during the summer.
The manager confirmed on Friday that he is monitoring Squillaci but he knows he has work to do to supplement his squad before the transfer deadline passes on September 1.
"There is not a lot to say but he [Squillaci] is one of the players we look at," said Wenger at his pre-match press conference.
"It is easier on the goalkeeper front because we are not short of numbers. With central defenders we are short number-wise so we look at him and he's one of the defenders we look at.
"But we are far from being close to signing him."
