Arsène Wenger believes Thomas Vermaelen’s commanding performance against Everton will be a big boost to his confidence.
The Arsenal captain started Wednesday's game at left back, but was moved inside after Laurent Koscielny limped off in the fourth minute at Goodison Park.
Vermaelen coped well with the physical threat posed by Marouane Fellaini and Nikica Jelavic, and Wenger says it could be an important step for him.
“It was certainly his best game since the start of the season in this position,” the manager told Arsenal Player.
“That will boost his confidence and hopefully get out of his mind what happened before when he was not completely confident.
“He was physically sharp, confident, calm and important for us.”
