Arsène Wenger believes the abundance of high-scoring games between the top sides this season could be a result of early goals.

In the current top six only Manchester City have avoided conceding at least five goals in a league match this term, with Tottenham the latest victims after Arsenal’s 5-2 victory at Emirates Stadium last weekend.

Although Wenger believes there is no definitive explanation for the regular goal rushes, he suggests that early strikes are a catalyst.

“I don’t find an obvious reason,” said Wenger. “Maybe because when you have derbies like that they are blocked tactically.

“But if there are early goals, there is no way of holding back. The teams really go for it.

“The fact that the teams have to take the handbrake off early and the fact that we have quality strikers in the league, are the only explanations I have.”
