Arsène Wenger has condemned the attack by a supporter on Celtic manager Neil Lennon as “horrendous and not acceptable”.

The Celtic manager was knocked to the ground by an intruding fan as he stood in his technical area during a Scottish Premier League match at Hearts on Wednesday.

The man appeared to throw a punch at Lennon before he was restrained by stewards.

“It is horrendous and not acceptable,” said Wenger. “I have often felt very aggressive behaviour in the stands but never physically faced anybody who was disrespectful.

“It is quite amazing how English people are always respectful when you meet them outside the game and how aggressive they are once in there.

“It is like you have two different people. But outside the stadium I am always amazed at how respectful they are.”
