Arsène Wenger believes Andy Carroll’s presence on a football pitch means the Newcastle striker has a bright future ahead of him.

Tall and powerful, he has shown a fearless streak this season, bullying defences in the Premier League and scoring five goals in nine games including a hat-trick against Aston Villa.

Much has been said about Carroll’s life away from the field, though on it his influential character has convinced Wenger he can cope with the expectation that comes with wearing the Newcastle No 9 shirt.

“On the pitch he has a presence and a charisma,” said the Frenchman.

“This guy is just scared of nothing and that’s why I believe he has special charisma. It looks like he can [carry the weight on his shoulders].

“You just think there is something there for him from watching from the outside.”
