Arsène Wenger believes British linesmen are the best in the businesss.
The role of referees’ assistants is a hot topic this week following Arsenal’s controversial second goal at Newcastle in the Carling Cup on Wednesday night.
The linesman did not flag because Bendtner was not deemed to be ‘in active play’ – a relatively new concept that saw the offside rule updated in 2005.
Some have called for a return to the basic interpretation of offside but Wenger believes linesmen can be trusted to make the right call.
“It [the old rule] was easier for the referee certainly,” said Wenger.
“But I must say to their credit that the linesmen have improved tremendously in England to judge the offside decisions.
“I see many games in Europe and I think they get it right in England more than anywhere else.”Copyright 2016 The Arsenal Football Club plc. Permission to use quotations from this article is granted subject to appropriate credit being given to www.arsenal.com as the source
