Wenger - Away goals rule makes us audacious
By Richard Clarke
Arsène Wenger believes the format of the Champions League will force his side to be “audacious” at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
Of course, attacking football is in the Frenchman’s DNA. But you could argue that a major European Semi-Final first leg on the ground of the most successful side in England over the last decade is an occasion for caution. However Wenger feels the away goals rule means a visiting side must chance their arm.
“At this level you have to be audacious away,” said the manager speaking before the weekend. “The weight of the away goal in European football could be discussed I feel. It may be a little bit too heavy.
“We have spoken about it, maybe making it a Carling Cup rule where it only comes in at extra time. At the moment you are encouraged to be very cautious at home but very audacious away from home.”
