Theo Walcott admits Arsenal weren’t completely on their game against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday night.

After taking an early lead the Gunners lacked fluency and in the absence of their usual flowing football went down to 2-1 thanks to Eduardo’s neat finish on the stroke of half-time.

Walcott conceded that Arsène Wenger’s side were below-par but he also feels credit should be given to the endeavour of their opponents.

“We did show spells in the second half where we were the real Arsenal, but it wasn't meant to be tonight,” he said. “They were just better than us.

“I don't know, it didn't really seem to flow at times.

“It is a tough place to come to. Their home record speaks for itself. But getting that early goal we could have gone on and done a bit better.

“Going 2-1 down at half time was very disappointing.

“We all felt like it could have been more for them, we were lucky to go 2-1 down at half time to be honest.”
